I feel hopeless (as a sophomore) going into my Junior year internship recruiting journey

Hello all,

I'm a sophomore at a top target school (Wharton), with a terrible GPA of 3.3 after a couple really bad grades in my freshman year. I'm currently recruiting for IB at several firms (EB, BB, and MM), and have networked extensively throughout my sophomore fall. However, I really fear that my GPA is going to prove fatal in my quest to get first round interviews and although I'm on the right track to pushing it up next semester and maybe over summer, it'll be too late. I've only received rejections so far, while all my friends seem to have near perfect GPAs and seem to be doing very well in recruiting. What do I do? I believe to have a pretty strong resume, as well as good technical knowledge, but I don't think I'm going to make it past the initial screenings because of my GPA. Idk im just losing sleep over this and needed to rant.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know to tackle your situation and boost your chances:

1. Leverage Networking to Offset GPA Concerns

  • Networking is your secret weapon. Many WSO threads emphasize that a strong network can help bypass GPA filters. Continue reaching out to alumni, professionals, and even peers who can vouch for you. Build genuine relationships and ask for advice, not just referrals. People are more likely to push your resume if they feel a connection.
  • Focus on alumni at your target firms—they are often more empathetic and willing to help. Use LinkedIn, school databases, and networking events to identify them.

2. Highlight Strengths on Your Resume

  • If your major GPA is higher than your cumulative GPA, list it prominently. For example: "Finance GPA: 3.7" instead of your overall GPA.
  • Emphasize your technical skills, relevant coursework, and any leadership roles or extracurriculars that demonstrate your commitment to finance.
  • Include any internships, even if they’re not directly in IB, that showcase transferable skills like financial modeling, research, or client interaction.

3. Ace the Behavioral and Technical Interviews

  • Your GPA might get you filtered out at some firms, but for those where you make it through, you need to shine in interviews. Practice behavioral questions to tell a compelling story about your resilience and growth. For example, explain how you’ve learned from your freshman year struggles and are now on an upward trajectory.
  • Continue refining your technical knowledge. WSO’s IB Prep guides and interview guides are excellent resources to ensure you’re ready to impress.

4. Target Boutique and Middle Market Firms

  • While BB and EB firms are highly competitive, boutique and MM firms may have more flexibility with GPA requirements. Many WSO users have shared success stories of breaking into IB through these firms and lateraling to larger firms later.

5. Consider Timing and Strategy

  • If you’re not getting traction now, consider extending your graduation date to allow for another summer internship. This gives you more time to improve your GPA, gain experience, and network.
  • Alternatively, focus on securing a strong junior summer internship, even if it’s not in IB. Roles in corporate finance, Big 4 advisory, or even smaller PE shops can provide valuable experience and make you a stronger candidate for full-time recruiting.

6. Stay Resilient and Keep Perspective

  • Recruiting is tough, and rejection is part of the process. Many successful professionals faced similar challenges but persevered. Focus on what you can control—networking, GPA improvement, and interview prep—and don’t compare yourself to others.

7. Actionable Steps for the Next Few Months

  • Network weekly: Set a goal to reach out to 5-10 new contacts each week.
  • Boost your GPA: Take easier electives or retake classes if possible to improve your cumulative GPA.
  • Apply broadly: Don’t limit yourself to just BB and EB firms. Explore regional boutiques, MM firms, and even non-IB roles that can serve as stepping stones.
  • Practice interviews: Use WSO guides and mock interviews to refine your skills.

Remember, your GPA is just one part of your story. With strong networking, a polished resume, and excellent interview skills, you can still land a great opportunity. Keep pushing forward—Max the Monkey believes in you! 🐒
