IB into tech, smart or dumb?

Is going from investment banking into a tech  role worth the WLB given the huge tradeoff in comp over the long term? Does it close all other exit opps in finance forever?

Curious to hear opinions/experiences if you know anyone who has taken this route.

Not sure if useful, but figured I'd post just in case. Apologies if not.  I live in a tech heavy area and most of my friends and family work in tech. I get a lot of exposure to it.

In my experience, the tech WLB is heavily overstated around here. Banking culture is to have a dick measuring contest over how many hours you work. Tech culture is to have a dick measuring contest over how few hours you work and how stupid everyone else is for not working in tech. Life in tech is often much harder than blind/tiktok makes it sound (in my experience, not claiming I know everything or am an expert). For instance, I work in FO macro research for a BB, and I have a close relative who works way more hours in her tech job for way less money. Lastly, now is not a great time to be in tech. Layoffs have already started, comp is moving down, and hours are moving up.

I guess my advice would be: be very careful. Good luck and I hope you land somewhere with solid WLB!
