Incoming CC Student – Strategy for Cornell (Dyson) / Top Transfer & Consulting Goals
Background:
I’m starting at Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) this Fall. My ultimate goal is to transfer to a target like Cornell (Dyson) or Michigan (Ross) for consulting/high finance. I know the odds for CC transfers are brutal, so I want my strategy airtight from day one.
My Plan:
- Academics: Mapping out all strict prerequisites for Dyson/Ross. I am taking Calculus 1 this Fall to show heavy quant rigor immediately. Aiming for a 4.0.
- Extracurriculars: Currently volunteering at a food pantry. Planning to target leadership in the Business/Econ Club, Phi Theta Kappa, or IRS VITA by my second semester.
- Skills: Starting to learn Excel and basic case prep so I’m ready for internship recruiting later.
My Questions:
- What is the #1 "low-hanging fruit" opportunity I should target on or off campus to stand out for elite transfers?
- What common mistakes do CC freshmen make that kill their top-tier transfer chances?
- How do I balance keeping a perfect GPA with building a professional resume (networking, modeling) during these first two years?
Any harsh truths or advice would be appreciated!

Thanks for the detailed advice! I have a few specific follow-up questions regarding classes and networking as I prepare to start at BHCC this fall:
1. Math Sequencing: Regarding course loads and prioritizing GPA, I will be taking Calculus 1 at my CC during my freshman year. Do Dyson and Ross expect to see advanced math (like Calc 2, Linear Algebra, or rigorous Stats) completed by the time I apply in my sophomore year to prove my quantitative ability, or is just finishing Calc 1 and Accounting with a 4.0 enough?
2. Networking Timeline: You mentioned reaching out to Dyson/Ross students on LinkedIn. Should I start cold-messaging them right now before I even start classes, or is it better to wait until I have my first-semester 4.0 GPA locked in so I have strong academic proof when I introduce myself?
3. Finding CC Alumni: What is the best way to actually track down alumni from my community college (or CCs in general) who successfully transferred to elite programs? Should I primarily rely on specific LinkedIn search filters, or are there better ways to find these non-traditional students?
this is a bot… based on your post and this response you first need to stop phasing everything you think through chatgpt and speak to someone who’s transferred and recruited afterwards. dyson only takes ~3 non TO transfers a year, and CC transfers are very rare at Cornell (i only know of one). would recommend applying to literally any other school within Cornell (ILR, Hotel) because it doesn’t matter a lot for recruiting. your classes don’t matter for the most part but if you haven’t taken the prereqs just take those and the easiest classes you can bake into your schedule (calc 1 = quant rigor 😭). most of transferring is having good gpa, impactful EC’s beyond just joining clubs that are factored into whatever you want to study, and explaining why you want to pursue it at x school. there are other schools beyond Dyson/Ross that are just as prestigious and have better outcomes so you additionally need to expand your horizons. seriously lock in dude and stop using LLMs to plan your future
Incoming transfer to northwestern here. I’m coming from a lower semi target, and trust me when I say that your courses DONT matter. I took japanese history and all my gen eds my first semester, ended up with a 4.0. I built a nonprofit connecting a bunch of high schools and unis in my area, and my application focused on how I want to pursue education. You have to remember that these schools have enough finance bros, and want flavor in their transfer class instead of ppl prestige whoring (they can see straight thru that) This means that you inevitably have to spend a lot of time on stuff that might not be relevant to IB to try and secure a transfer slot, but it’s well worth it. I recommend applying TED to northwestern or uchicago, and applying for full pay (massive boost). Also, on the AI side, use that shit to your full extent…. i slammed 4 remote internships last semester while having a real job as a sous and could NOT have done it without AI. perplexity pro and gemini pro are your best friends with free student plans, but just make sure to respect people’s time on forums like this by typing out your real thoughts. The biggest piece of advice i can give you is to go to the reddit page r/transfertotop25, they have some great resources there! Good luck!
Thanks for the advice and I have also looked into the reddit transfer page. I also have perplexity pro for a year. I just wanted to know once you transfer in are you going to switch into finance and did you have any other ecs or teacher recommendations?
I was lucky because I went to a state school that was close to where I lived, so I was well connected and had little to no adjusting period. I won’t get too specific into my ECs (for anonymity’s sake) but here’s a list of stuff I did last sem. for context my hs stats: 3.97UW, 4.68 W, 34 ACT, 2 papers published and 1 mentoring nonprofit.
College stats (last semester ONLY):4.0 GPAnew mentoring nonprofit (focus), connecting 2 unis at 5 high schools, impacted 4001 options paper publishedBlog substack focused on ed policyF100 investment banking(kinda) remote internshipprivate equity internshipfintech internshipESG internshipjob as sous chef at local restaurant (got rec from executive chef)business fratvarious clubs
I didn’t list a single internship on my transfer app, your story has to be complete and can’t take away from your narrative. Also, less is more on the application 1000%, don’t add anything in the additional info section unless you have something serious to mention (like a chronic disease, more on homelessness, etc.) This is what I meant when I said that you have to lock in, and basically work twice as hard as everyone else because you might not even get into the school of your choice, and you don’t wanna be behind at your current school if that happens recruiting wise.
Yes I’m planning on switch majors, but at a top school your major doesn’t really matter.
If I were you I would also aim for schools like BC, Tufts, Northeastern in the region where your school is at. The reason is :1. Would say many non-target succeeded in having top offers this year (bc is at least a semi target and I also saw people from NE going to great places) 2. Never lose hope but Dyson is hard to get into. I don't know much about CC and related transfer policy but if you keep trying I'm sure you will get into good places
3. You can also try network with college students (class of 26/27) if you want right now. Having some solid relations can help you a lot by the time you recruit regardless of your university
Thanks for the list of schools, I definitely have bc as a top transfer option in case I get rejected from target schools in the future. And just wanted to know, how strong is the alumni network into finance roles at NE and BC?
