Ineffective coffee chats/how to actually get a referral?
Hey everyone, I had a couple quick questions. I just recently started coffee chats for summer 2026 IB recruitment, and the chats are going fine. They are all phone calls, since I come from a non target and cant really meet any coffee chat people in person, and I also dont think they have time for that. However, how do I know if these are actually effective? I feel like i cant just straight up ask these people for a referral, since its basically our first ever conversation/interaction. i guess what im saying is i dont know if im making the most effective use of these coffee chats. how do i take better advantage of them? do i need to specifically ask/email them for a referral after our chat, is that how they work? any advice helps, thanks!

What do you mean you can’t just ask for a referral? That’s exactly what the fuck you’re supposed to do, it’s called a call-to-action - selling yourself 101.
You get to the end of the call, “haha well, thanks John. This has been super insightful and really confirmed my interest in potentially working at X bank. Do you happen to know if anyone else on your team would be willing to speak with me about the role?”
Then you follow up over email within 24 hours with your resume attached. Say you enjoyed the conversation and look forward to the process or whatever. Finance people know exactly what’s up, if they don’t take the lead from there to get you introduced it means you didn’t impress that person enough so they’re not inspired to push you along. That simple. Keep it pushing until you find a nut on the team you can crack, good luck.
