Internship Advice - Landing an internship

hey guys,
I need some advice on landing an internship this summer. Over the past two summers, I have struggled to obtain a finance internship. I'm currently struggling with landing even an interview especially this year. I understand my extracurricular activities are weak because I have had to support my self through school. I do not attend a target school but attend a top public business school. My school is ranked top 20 in finance (I understand rankings do not mean much). My GPA is above a 3.5 and I held a leadership position in a club until last year. I have applied to around twenty to thirty places. I'm looking to enter the finance world and eventually get into VC after grad school in a couple of years. any advice that can help me land an internship? I know that I need an internship if I want to land a job. I have applied to many top consulting firms around the country.

i would say network like crazy...the people who get internships are mainly the ones who personally know someone at the company. If you are applying to companies through their online career site without knowing someone at the company chances are they will only glance at your resume for 30 seconds. Try to email or call some places which you would be interested in working at especially at boutique/small operations. Also, ask your friends and family if they know anyone in finance and ask if you could talk to them about their career in finance and then ask for an internship. For example, I recently secured an internship at MS simply because a family friend knew a guy who worked there. So really try and network as 90% of jobs and internships are secured this way.Face to face contact or over the phone is key as they will have a connection with you.
