Internship / Traineeship in SGP/NY/LND

Hello fellow monkeys, I pursue a dual study programme (working at a bank while doing my bachelor’s degree) in Germany which I will finish this september. After my dual study programme I want to gain work experience abroad (preferably SGP, NY or LND). I applied at multiple BB‘s and even smaller banks (60+ applications) but often got no answer or I was being rejected. I don’t know whether this is because of me not being a citizen in these countries and companies that don’t want to sponsor a work visa for interns/trainees or because of my CV. Did anyone else in the European area have similar issues applying for an internship/traineeship abroad? I am grateful for any tips. Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and tips for your situation:

  1. Visa and Work Permit Challenges:

    • It's common for non-citizens to face difficulties when applying for internships or traineeships abroad due to visa and work permit issues. Companies may be reluctant to sponsor visas for short-term positions like internships.
  2. Application Strategy:

    • Timing: Ensure you are applying as early as possible in the application process. Timing is crucial, especially for competitive positions in major financial hubs like Singapore (SGP), New York (NY), and London (LND).
    • Cold Mailing: Consider cold mailing smaller firms and boutiques. Express your interest in unpaid work if necessary, as this can sometimes bypass the need for visa sponsorship.
  3. CV Optimization:

    • Make sure your CV is tailored to the standards and expectations of the region you are applying to. For example, London CVs might have specific formats and details that differ from those in Germany.
    • Highlight any relevant experience and skills that align with the job descriptions of the positions you are applying for.
  4. Language Skills:

    • If you speak any additional languages, especially those relevant to the region (e.g., Mandarin for Singapore, English for NY and LND), make sure to highlight this on your CV.
  5. Networking:

    • Leverage any connections you have in the industry. Networking can sometimes open doors that standard applications cannot.
    • Attend industry events, webinars, and use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your target regions.
  6. Persistence:

    • Keep applying and refining your approach based on feedback and rejections. Sometimes it’s a numbers game, and persistence can pay off.
