Hello everyone,
I recently finished my first year in a UK non-target university outside London and since my course is only 3 years I only have this summer and the next one before I graduate.
I realised the importance of a placement but I can't find anything online. The way my course works is that I can take a year-off if I have a placement. It's usually 3 years but if I land a one-year placement starting Summer 2019 it becomes 4. There are lots of 2, 3, and 6 month internships but they don't qualify as a placement.
I want to know which firms offer year long placements and if you have gone through this process I would highly appreciate any advice. I would be interested in hearing you out if for some reason you think internships are better than placements. I will apply for internships AND placements to at least 100 places but I'm still hesitant as to which one is better(e.g. internship in HSBC,Citi vs placement in Charles Stanley)

bump. TLDR: 3 year course (+1 if I have a placement). Probably wont have anything this summer. Should I go for an internship at well-known firm (DB,UBS,CS,Citi, Lloyds, HSBC etc) or get a placement(10-12 months work) for a less known firm? And does shadowing experience actually help in a CV?
Anything helps, even shadowing. Do what you want, if you want to do a placement go for it, but there are very few placement in FO jobs. Otherwise just apply to summer internships next year.
Thank you for your insight. One of my fears is that I will not have a job after I graduate even though I'll probably graduate with a First class (3.8-4.0 GPA) from a non-target. Do you think that an internship at a well-known firm is sufficient to help me find a job straight out of uni? The main argument for placements is that the firms often hire you FT as soon as you graduate.
I would appreciate any other thoughts you may have on placements. Do you happen to know how competitive it is? Do a lot of people apply?
I am a student in the UK, summers are convertible but placements are in most cases not. However you could do a placement + summer if you want and schedule well your placement (ie from mid june to mid june, and then summer from end june to early september).
Coming from a non target every role will be competitive. Aim at converting an internship rather than re-recruit for FT.
It stuck with me that most placements are not FO. I'll be applying for lots of different internships and we'll see where it takes me. Thank you!
UBS run a FO placement (called Corporate Client Solutions) GS,MS, HSBC as well nomura run an IB placement as well Look into investment 20/20 as well if AM interests you. Also, lots of smaller firms run placements, look at indeed and glassdoor. PM if you want a list of more.
