Interview Gone Wrong
Hey guys,
So I recently posted regarding my Hedge Fund Marketing interview that I had a week ago today. The actual interview went great; I have the background to get into the field and the guy I spoke with really liked me. So this interview was Monday. The guy asked me to come back in to meet the BSD on Friday -- I agreed. On Thursday, I receive an e-mail saying how the interview will be based around how I would go about marketing the fund, so naturally I do a ton of research and put together a compelling strategy and was excited to pass the information along.
Now Friday comes along and the BSD's asst pushes the interview back an hour, which is fine. I get to the office and she immediately finds me and is saying how a Friday is very rarely this busy and that the BSD is stuck in a meeting and will be with me in 10-15 minutes. 35 minutes later she comes into the conference room to apologize profusely and says that he's still stuck in the aforementioned meeting (she said she dbl booked his time by mistake). She then proceeds to say that she is going to pull the BSD out of his mtg so he can meet with me. I tell her that's not necessary but it was too late -- she was already gone.
So in comes the BSD (10 minutes later). He sits down and asks me about myself - I give him my story. He then goes do you have any questions for me? I ask him about his background and he answers and then promptly stands up and apologizes but he has to get back into the meeting he was pulled from. Shakes my hand, says he's interested in hearing other people's feedback on me and leaves.
BSD's assistant comes in 5 minutes later and says the other guy (the guy I met with on Monday) I'm supposed to meet with is all tied up as well and she can't pull him from that meeting and said he'd be in touch. She was there to escort me out. I was there for over an hour and had 5 minutes with the BSD. That was it!
I was angry, but more disappointed then anything else as I really, really want this position. How would you guys go about getting back in there? I sent thank you's to all 3 parties (BSD, the guy I spoke to on Monday, and the assistant) on Friday and haven't heard anything yet.
P.S. This is a GREAT reason as to why you get in good with assistants (it seems like she completely messed up his calendar)!
In addition to the thank you's you sent (which I assume are emails), why not go the extra mile and also send out old-fashioned, handwritten letters to all three parties? For the letter to the BSD, you can write about some of the things that you were supposed to discuss during the interview (e.g. how to market the fund) and how you can add value to the fund. This strategy is less effective at big firms, but I have seen it work at smaller firms (including hedge funds) so why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose.
Jesus.. Just NO (to the above about old style letters).
Well I'm thinking about calling the guy (tomorrow) I interviewed with on Monday. Any thoughts on that? Should I just call today maybe?
I wouldnt call. Just hold tight for a few days, they're obviously pretty busy. They have your emails, they liked you; continuing to reach out will accomplish nothing.
Wait until a week or so to call. They're busy now, give them some space.
