investments internship advice

Sup boyos:

I have a pretty interesting background in terms of making into finance but I seek the wisdom(?) of you fine people here before I start at my new job. Non-target, low GPA person here, studied political science at a large state school on the east coast and just graduated summer 18. Started off interning in Congress like any good polisci major, then I scored an internship overseas with the corporate strategy team of a fortune 100 multinational in Germany. Later I interned in the government affairs office of a financial trade association in Washington before finishing up school.

I was lucky enough to have a connect at a family office-turned investment manager, who reached out to me about interning on the investment team. Didn't really think I had a shot but the in-person interview was really chill before they hit me with a pretty significant case study involving analyzing a potential investment in a privately sourced opportunity. Somehow I beat out the other candidates (no doubt with some pushing from my friend, we'll see) but I am now officially on as the team's intern for the foreseeable future.

It was made clear to me that goal of internship is to hire a full-time analyst sometime in the spring/summer so I am definitely gunning for that. Wondering if you guys have any tips for me in terms of making that goal a reality. Keep in mind the following issues:

  1. I have no financial experience whatsoever bar some small accounting work at German company. I am planning to take an online modeling class or something like that--any pointers on where to go?
  2. I've been buying stocks since I was 16 years old but I have really no experience in private/venture situations. What are some books I can read/publications to follow to get up to speed?
  3. I'll be commuting from out of state to NYC for the first month or so as the internship is only 20-30 hours off the rip, it seems that around month 2 or month 3 it'll escalate to a full 35-40 hours a week. Thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Any additional advice is generously welcomed.
