Is job hopping really that effective for maximizing your total career compensation?

I've seen some articles here and there saying people make more money/ are able to progress their careers faster by job hopping every 3 or so years. That makes sense to me and is what I plan for my own career, but does any person here have firsthand experience with this?

Thanks

It has worked for me.

I have witnessed a lot of people leave a company for a competitor, then go back to the original company in a better role for higher compensation (much higher than just annual increases / promotions).

At some point you have to stay at a job for awhile, but I think it is a decent way to quickly climb and find out about what you like / don't like with certain companies.

Maybe in the beginning, but ultimately you are going to want to own something and hopping around does not really allow you to do that. It ultimately becomes a trust thing...

I know a lot of people who seemed to bounce from Place 1 to Place 2 around 18 months out of college, and from Place 2 to Place 3 18 months after that. So in three years they moved twice, and then just straight posted up at the third spot. Doesn't seem like they needed to move too much beyond that.
