Hi. My name is xxx and I'm a sophomore at xxx. So I learned about investment banking last year. My school offers this program for first generation, low income students where they basically assign you to a mentor in the field you want to go into. And my mentor was a former banker at JPMorgan, and I thought his job was super cool because his work involved valuing businesses and finding out what drives firm value. He introduced me to his former colleagues at the bank, and I really enjoyed my conversations with them. I found that JPMorgan bankers are very intelligent and down-to-earth and willing to help others out. Finally, I own a JPMorgan checking account, and definitely had to overdraft my account a few times in high school to help my mom pay bills. And the support team could not be more understanding. and I think it just goes to show how JPMorgan really values their customers and image.

With this question, the firm wants to know you have done some research into the company. Your response isn't strong because it doesn't showcase this, instead you give a wishy washy statement about two guys you have met that you liked that happen to work there. You also mention you have a checking account with JP Morgan, but as someone else has mentioned, investment banking is very different to commercial banking.

I would point you to looking at JP Morgan's website and looking at their financial statements. Look at their annual statement and look at what the CEO thinks JP Morgan's strengths are and his strategic vision. This should be a good starting point with helping you think about why you personally want to work there.

Thank you for your thoughts. Will do everything you recommended. Just wanted to know how bad the previous answer would be? If i said this in a hirevue, would I be dinged?

It's hard to say tbh without knowing what exactly you are applying for, what your responses are like for other questions, how you come across on camera etc. Ultimately, I don't think this single question will get you dinged if you are applying for spring weeks for example, but at the same time it's not doing you any favours.

Def talk about JD’s leadership, but would also mention team and the particular group you are interested in. Absolutely watch this and this whole channel for that matter
