London IB - Blacklisted for failing AC/interview?

Is it ever practised among London BBs to blacklist candidates who fail an AC/interview from getting to the interview stage in the subsequent year's IB recruitment season (assuming graduation date eligibility requirements are met in the next season through a master's)?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, blacklisting for failing an assessment center (AC) or interview is not a common practice among London BBs. However, there are nuances to consider:

  1. Feedback and Performance: If you performed poorly or displayed unprofessional behavior during the process, it might leave a negative impression. While this doesn't equate to a formal "blacklist," it could influence future chances if the same recruiters or teams are involved.

  2. Networking and Reapplication: Many candidates reapply successfully after improving their profiles, gaining relevant experience, or pursuing a master's degree. Networking with individuals at the bank and demonstrating growth can help mitigate any prior negative impressions.

  3. Recruitment Teams: Recruitment teams often change, and memories of past candidates may fade, especially if there was no significant issue beyond not progressing.

  4. Eligibility: As long as you meet the eligibility requirements (e.g., graduation date), you should still be able to apply. Some candidates have even shared experiences of reapplying and succeeding after initially being rejected.

In summary, while formal blacklisting is rare, your approach to reapplying—showing improvement, networking, and addressing any past weaknesses—will be key to overcoming any potential hurdles.

Can't comment on all banks but my previous bank (top US BB in London) did not blacklist in these cases.

Yes, the applications may ask if you've applied previously, and you should answer truthfully, as HR will have a record.

But, if you've got an additional Master's programme AND more relevant work experience (e.g. smaller IB internship, PE fund, etc) you will hopefully get looks.

I will caveat that if you've only got the Master's programme as an incremental improvement to your CV, it may not get you looks, unless it's a top-target Master's. So I would also explore what additional relevant experience you can add with the additional time that the Master's will afford you.
