Lost in life. Don't know what career to pursue

Hi everyone,

So, as the heading states, I am feeling lost and was hoping someone could give me career advice.

I work at a business valuation company. It is very small but I get a lot of valuable work experience from it. I work here as a valuation analyst and so do:

Creating and maintenance of financial models, that utilizie cash flows to determine EBITDA subsequently the fair market value of the shares of companies. It is very technical heavy and it's starting to get old. I cannot see myself working in business valuations for the rest of my life.

So I will tell you about my background: -I graduated in January 2017 from an accounting major. Got a job as a junior associate at a small accounting firm. Hated it, left accounting and the job. Left after 3 months - Then I got a job as a financial analyst at a bonding company. I really enjoyed it, but I didn't feel like there was much upward mobility. Left after 5 months. - Worked at a BB trust company division. I worked there for 8 months in an administrative role... It was slow and a temp contract. -I wanted to work with more excel so I got the job at a valuation company.

But I find that I am just doing the same thing, over and over in excel. Perhaps it's because this company is small? Anyway, I am starting to worry about wasting time in life, and I am thinking about pursuing a CFA. I would like a job that has a degree of excel and social interaction, I came across Commercial Mortgage Underwriting.

It appears to have a healthy dose of modelling, interaction and relationship building with brokers and challenge.

Can anyone who is familiar with Commercial Capital Lending, attest to my assessment? Is it fulfilling and stimulating?

Are there any other jobs or career paths you would suggest? (It is important to me I maintain a regular 9-5 work life).

Thanks

It's very easy to get paralysis by analysis and to let indecision paralyze you. I suggest you do informational interviews and ask people about their jobs, and then go intern at a few places. Nothing will teach you more what you do and do not like in a profession faster than doing some form of that profession for a while.

Also I see that you keep getting modeling/Excel jobs and hate it. Maybe you need to make a hard lateral move and intern at some things that are totally different. Doing the same or similar things that you've hated in the past, will just yield the same unhappy results. You need to try something totally different.

You are young. Like @earthwalker7" says, try to informally have a bunch of informational interviews. See what people say about their jobs. Try new hobbies, join a new club. Meet a diverse group of people, after all they need to live as well, and so they will be working... Your problem is not all that different from many (most?) people in their work. Most of us are totally lost and trying to figure it out (and are older than you). Many deny it or put up a facade (this is all due to peer pressure), sadly.

What I am trying to say is, in short, is that it's totally ok to feel that way and that you are not alone. Go forth and explore, ask questions, try new things and hopefully you will find something you like more!

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.
