I’m an Italian candidate currently looking to break into J.P. Morgan, and I want to make the most of an opportunity: I have a friend working in Private Banking in the U.S. who is willing to refer me. Given this, I want to maximize my chances of landing a role by choosing the right location and function within the bank.

  • ESCP Business School (Master in Management, 3.7/4 GPA)
  • LUISS Guido Carli University (Bachelor in Economics, 110/110 cum laude)
  • International experience across London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Russia
• Professional Experience:
  • Sustainability Consulting at EY
  • Operations & Industrial Relations
  • Business Development at a Startup

My Questions:

1. Best Locations to Apply – My friend is in the U.S., but should I target roles in London, New York, or other locationswhere J.P. Morgan has strong hiring trends? As an Italian candidate, I initially considered Milan, but I know that there are no suitable positions for me there at the moment. Would it be more strategic to apply directly to major financial hubs like London or New York, or are there other regions in Continental Europe (e.g., Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich) that might offer better entry opportunities?
2. Best Functions for My Profile – I am particularly interested in Private Banking (which my friend is in), but should I also consider Wealth Management, Asset Management, or other divisions that might be a good fit for my background?
3. Maximizing the Referral – How should I leverage my connection for the best chances of securing an interview? Are there particular divisions where an internal reference carries more weight?
4. Other Things to Keep in Mind – Are there any additional steps I should take to improve my chances? For example, networking strategies, specific certifications (CFA, CAIA, etc.), or application timing?
