Minimum Wage SA Pay

Hey everyone, first time posting on here so please bear with me. Since I'm discussing a sensitive subject, please understand that I cannot disclose certain specifics. Basically, I got a SA offer for MM IB but the pay structure is really confusing me. They determined my gross weekly pay by dividing the annualized salary (which is already below the street average) by 52, but then they said that this figure is for 80 hrs a week including both base and OT. This results in hourly pay near minimum wage and OT pay well below $30 an hour. Everyone I know is getting paid around $40-50 hourly for 40 hours and 1.5x OT for anything beyond that. Am I misunderstanding the pay structure in my offer letter or do some MM banks pay this horrendously?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Pay Structure Confusion: It's not uncommon for MM (Middle Market) banks to have varied pay structures. Your confusion seems to stem from how your gross weekly pay is calculated. Dividing the annualized salary by 52 weeks and then considering 80 hours a week (including both base and OT) can indeed result in a lower hourly rate.

  2. Comparison with Peers: You mentioned that your peers are getting paid around $40-50 hourly for 40 hours and 1.5x OT for anything beyond that. This is more in line with industry standards for many banks, especially in larger financial centers.

  3. Regional Differences: Pay can vary significantly based on the region and the specific bank. For instance, in the context provided, there are mentions of pay differences based on location and the strength of the team or MD you work under. For example, in London, pay can be influenced by group strength and internal politics.

  4. Negotiation and Clarification: It might be worth clarifying the pay structure with HR or your hiring manager. If the pay is significantly below what you expected or what your peers are receiving, you might want to consider negotiating or exploring other opportunities.

  5. Legal and Policy Considerations: Be cautious about discussing pay with colleagues, as some banks have strict policies against it. However, understanding your worth and ensuring fair compensation is crucial.
