Negotiate Intern Pay Salary?

Hi WSO,

So I'm a sophomore at a Target who like most is in search of a great internship for next summer. I've received an offer from a boutique real estate private equity firm (15 people in the company). The experience seems like it would be great, but the pay, however is relatively low, lower than what I made in my freshman year internship. I have an offer currently from a F500 in a completely unrelated role but the pay is closer to $23/hr (almost 50% higher).

I had a super day with the RE PE firm and they had 2 people interviewing for the intern role and I was told on multiple occasions that they were looking to hire 2 interns. As a result, I am relatively sure we were the only two being considered for the role and we were both offered positions. I'm not sure if it would be taboo to get somewhat of a pay raise but I wanted to see what you all thought.

Thanks!

Unless you have immediate financial concerns, I would not recommend negotiating your intern pay. I think the more important question you should ask is why they are paying so low? Is the firm struggling? Think long term, pick the internship that is going to set you up the best for junior year recruiting. It's certainly possible that the f500 will set you up better depending on the position.

Thanks for the response. I really have no way of knowing if the RE firm pay has trended downwards from what they paid previously. They are actively seeking to grow so if anything I would assume their pay would have increased. The F500 is an oil/gas company in a non-trading/finance role. So I'm not exactly sure how beneficial it would be for a junior year internship.
