Networking for jobs during COVID-19...?

Has anyone had any luck with the old adage of constantly networking in 2020? Any tips, stories, experiences on how people are going about networking / job hunting these days? Other than a few friendly texts / emails every few months I have no idea how to replace the happy hour / coffee sessions.

In my particular situation, I know someone from my school that I haven't kept in touch with much the last year or two but am friendly with. They work at a firm with an opening I want to apply to, but because we can't exactly meet at a coffee shop due to COVID-19 I am a bit puzzled about how to go about inquiring about it.
