here is what happened to me. I networked with everyone(in division I applied to) in every firm. lots of applications but only 5 firms interviewed me (prolly bcz international but idk). Anws, interviewed a superstar hedge fund, name dropped one senior analyst, interviewer instantly took note and pretty sure one of the big reasons I passed to second round. Finally got an AC in a big bank, reached out to 80 people, had a call with 8-9 of them. my interviewer asked everyone's names and their divisions. in the offer call they mentioned the fact that they liked my networking. Hope this helps to certain extend
Is this true of both BB and Boutiques? I was told by someone at a boutique that I should let them know when I've applied as there is an internal process for them to push my CV?
I just tried to give my own story there tbh. As an analyst yourself im sure you have more knowledge regarding this. But I have to ask: yes I agree it isn't "required" but sometimes it gives advantages, no? CVs passed to HR give commission if they are hired, so isn't it somewhat helpful if you actually network insanely well?
If you know how to network / are a people person, networking doesn't harm your chances. But you can break in without any networking. I made it in London without ever having worked for a company there and without knowing anyone.
best way to put it, and the least networking does is help give you a better understanding of the industry/job which you can use in interviews/ on the job so will always say Networking>Not networking.

so basically I would advise networking after getting an interview so you have much deeper understanding of the firm. Some people give you mega tips
Anecdotal. Networking is not required in London and frankly firms have provisions in place to stop networking giving any undue advantage.

Going to campus events and presentations helps infinitely more times than some coffee chat which doesn't lead to a referral
