Networking timing mistake: How to do this in the least bad way?

I am a junior at a top LAC and applied for a summer internship that is pretty much impossible to get without networking. It's in advertising, and there are few spots and way too many applicants. I think I am well-qualified for the role, though. But I fucked up and did not network with relevant alums before I applied. I was focused on building relationships that would help for a different sumer opp which I did land.

I have some alumni -- any my school's alumni network is tight -- who work at the company. I just applied yesterday. Can I do an informational interview NOW and try to drop in that I just applied? I don't know how to do this in a tactful way because my timing was terrible. Or should I just drop it?

If you already landed one opportunity, why do you want this one more?
