Networking with Ex's dad

I'm going to be extremely sparse on details with this post for obvious reasons. My ex's dad is the CEO of a large PE shop (somewhere between 50-100B AUM). Had an internship there last summer from him but nothing this summer. I go to a complete non-target in NYC but have a very solid GPA/ACT score (4.0; 32-36 range). Going to be a junior in the fall. Networked with a few people in IB but I'd prefer PE out of undergrad if possible. Not URM, so coming from a non-target to IB or PE is tough. Is it worth trying to get him to get me something else, either at his shop or elsewhere? Been broken up with her for ~one year. He offered me the original internship.

It depends. Was it an amicable breakup? Are you still on speaking terms with your ex?

Maybe the better question is if you’d be willing to get back with her...or if she would be willing to get back with you..if you two get married, you can then do whatever you want for the rest of your life.

In all seriousness, a 4.0 GPA from any school is very impressive. You should be able to land banking interviews if you hustle a bit but as you mentioned, PE will be an uphill battle right out of undergrad. That being said, it’s very difficult to break into MF PE right out of school, even if you went to Harvard or Wharton.

Assuming that you didn’t cheat on your ex (or horribly screw her over) and that you two are still on decent terms, it might be worth a shot to reach out to him.
