Networking with LinkedIn InMail?

I got access to a LinkedIn Sales Navigator subscription and I now have 150 InMail™ messages. An InMail message allows me to message literally anyone one LinkedIn without being connected to them. How can I use these messages to help begin building my network?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies to effectively use LinkedIn InMail messages to build your network:

  1. Target Alumni and Common Connections:

    • Start by reaching out to Villanova alumni. Mentioning a shared background can increase the likelihood of a response.
    • Look for professionals who have something in common with you, such as similar interests or career paths.
  2. Personalize Your Messages:

    • Avoid generic messages. Personalize each InMail by mentioning specific details about the recipient’s background or career that genuinely interest you.
    • Example: "Hi Name, I noticed that you graduated from Villanova and have built a successful career in investment banking. As a rising sophomore at Villanova, I would love to learn more about your journey and any advice you might have for someone starting out."
  3. Be Concise and Respectful of Their Time:

    • Keep your messages short and to the point. Respect their time by asking for a brief 10-15 minute conversation.
    • Example: "I understand you have a busy schedule, but if you could spare 10-15 minutes for a quick call, I would greatly appreciate it."
  4. Show Genuine Interest in Learning:

    • Approach networking with the mindset of wanting to learn rather than just seeking a job. This will make your interactions more successful.
    • Example: "I’m very interested in learning more about your experiences at company and any insights you can share about the industry."
  5. Follow Up and Maintain Relationships:

    • After the initial conversation, follow up with a thank-you message and keep them updated on your progress. This helps in maintaining the relationship.
    • Example: "Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I found our conversation very insightful and will definitely apply your advice. I’ll keep you updated on my progress."
  6. Utilize Tools and Automation:

    • Use tools like CRM (Customer Relationship Management) to keep track of your contacts and follow-ups. This helps in building a network at scale.
    • Example: Tools like Hubspot can help you take notes on calls, track email opens, and plan your next contact.

By following these strategies, you can effectively use your LinkedIn InMail messages to build a strong and valuable network.
