Okay to underprice yourself

Hi WallStreetOasis,

Have you ever under priced yourself? I would like to hear reactions from those on the hiring side of the table. You like a candidate, are thinking of extending an offer but his expected salary was at the bottom or below the budget.

Does his expected being low affect his candidacy? Did you give him a salary HIGHER than his expected?

Consider this: Candidate's current base 50k. He goes for the standard 20% increase. His expected 60k. But budget for position is 70k to 90k. IMPORTANT: You believe he has the potential to rise very quickly. Do you: 1. Give him 60k. 2. Give him 70k. 3. Think he is stupid to ask for 60k while the market is at 70k.

Cheers, Nijikon
