PE Right out of Undergraduate

A week ago, I had an interesting conversation with an MD. I'm currently an undergrad at a pretty solid target (not Harvard/Wharton level however), and he recommended that I look to go straight into PE rather than do IB for 2 years out of college.
However, I had a couple questions regarding this. How feasible is this actually? And even if it is possible, how would I even go about recruiting for PE jobs as an undergrad? And finally, how do the hours/comp compare as an undergrad straight out of PE rather than in IB?
What are your thoughts?
