I have older folks that are mentors that did this in the past when it was probably a little more common. Give it a shot nothing to lose.

Couldn’t find any connections between myself and anyone at this firm, they’re pretty small. Would you recommend this cold networking over the letter? Never done much of either before

Most of the time they will throw away any resume/mail they receive. If your cold emails didn’t convert, your best bet may be through LinkedIn messaging. I wouldn’t send resume right away but a brief intro to set up a short call. Be prepared for the call, don’t take up too much time, and send follow up email with resume attached. Cold outreach is tough to convert especially in a highly sought after position. Broaden the horizons and keep pushing.

I agree. A senior person is likely older, and more old school, and the nostalgia of the approach might prove helpful.

A younger person wouldn't likely respond, because many might mock the concept of a physical letter, or might be too busy to read it. Also, a younger person might not yet have enough of a senior (or decision-maker) role, to be able to really advocate for the person, even if they desired.

I think the physical letter idea would need to target senior-level roles, likely older, and should have some 'reason' that needs to be communicated by looking at a physical paper, that might get lost via email.
