Had someone on the buyside once tell me that the only question they ask is: "What keeps you up at night?" (this is after they read all the standard sellside materials, CIM, audited financials etc.)
Another way to put this is "What wakes you up in the morning?".. This was said to me by a C level prospect (I'm in software sales, prepping for mba applications) after I asked him the "What keeps you up at night" question. I think he was tired of hearing the same question over and over, so he taught me a different option on the fly... Reality is, the CEOs has probably answered that question at least 10 times for different sales people, so in my opinion it's kinda lame today to ask these questions...
edit: could be a different situation for financial conversations, after they go through the material.. regardless though, it's a question these executives hear all the time.. need to get little creative or word it differently.. personalize it per se..
