Reaching out to an alum at a firm but isn't in the role I'm looking at?

As the title says, how best would I go about doing something like this?

I found a job posting at a firm I'm interested in; it's an alum of my school, but is in a banking role vs the valuation role I'm looking it.

Also wondering about catching up with a past connection from my school who used to work at a firm I'm interested in, albeit also in a different role.
