Reneging/rescinding internship offers.

I have an internship for a BB BO role that I have accepted for the summer and have received another offer for a FO role at a boutique,

should I renege the BO Internship offer for the FO one and what are the consequences of this?

Would they be understanding if I explain the situation or is this bridge burnt entirely, I applied online and had a referral for the BO position.

Happens all the time, no big deal. Obviously your referral may be annoyed, but you can call them first and explain - they'll understand. You may be blacklisted from the BB, but unlikely you'll be lateralling there for a FO position there unless the boutique is CVP etc.

Never overestimate your importance in someone else's life and, remember, the BB would not hesitate to rescind your offer if the "macroeconomic environment" had resulted in headcount reductions. Also, it's only a SA role and these things happen all the time - sometimes FT employees renege the night before they're meant to start. Put yourself first and do what's right for you.

Curious, what are the chances the company you've accepted the offer for finds out you're still interviewing? And if they find out will they rescind your offer?
