REPE Intern Tips to Succeed?
Starting an internship at relatively small internship in the south wondering if anyone can give advice on do's and don'ts? So far I've got some decent advice such as check your work always, never turn in a paper hot, be there early leave late, make sure to assimilate with the team, and if somebody tells you to go home when it's late just go home. Any other advice would be appreciated!
Also coming in as a current undergrad so no prior banking or PE experience.
I think the best info I can give you mate is to buy a solid leather bound notebook and carry that around to every interaction/ meeting you have. I found doing this and noting any new information/ terms would allow me to retain as much info as possible
A few quick tips..
Ask for advice/clarification when needed. If you don't know what or how to do what you have been asked, get direction before wasting your time. This may feel scary depending on how the team functions, but 'sweeping it under the rug' is a bad ides. You are an intern, not expected to know everything, be humble, it is respectable.
Don't turn in shit work. So, many university professors will let student turn in non-professional grade work, give an A, and make students think they did a good job. Some places students just get As or think the prof has to prove its not A work. This is bullshit and wrong in the work place. Work product must LOOK good, professional, and be correct/complete. This takes more time and effort, but is not hard. Early on, collect samples of prior work product, ask for templates, examples, etc. This is everything from PPT, memos, emails, and especially excel models. Look like the work came from a real analyst, not an intern, it matters.
Find ways to add extra value. This is not something for day one, but you should get some opportunities before an internship ends. Go beyond your assigned duties, do extra work, write up a piece of research that relates to an investment idea, whatever. Clearly, you need to figure out what will be valued to do this right. Little things here can impress and greatly up your chances of getting a FT offer if that is a possibility.
Good luck!
Carry a small notebook and pen with you wherever you go and take notes.
When someone says something you don't understand, write it down if it is terminology and look it up later or speak up if it is conceptual and write down whatever insight you're told.
