Right Thing To Say For: did you get a return // did you accept an offer elsewhere

Situation 1: kid I’m in mentorship program with did not get return offer over Jr. summer because of covid (returns were 20% in that group). Very smart guy, got an offer to a sweatshop IB that’s industry focused. Think FTP, Ardea, etc. But it’s genuinely not a good fit and honestly the ppl there suck from what he told me.

Has interview with BB lined up for FT, doesn’t know what to say. My advice is to say no I didn’t get an offer because of covid, I rerecruited and secured an offer to a ‘describe vaguely’ specialized bank but whose incoming class was halved without warning because of covid. Additionally most people he interviewed with have left which is concerning so i want to be Looking for: xyz qualities in specific BB bank.

Scenario 2: I been interviewing at a few PE shops and Corp dev etc. I have an offer and while I’m shopping, will say I’m deep in the process and end it there or say I’ve gotten an offer to expedite process. Less ambiguous and I’ve helped ppl navigate this before and it’s not as complicated as #1, just realized these 2 situations are connected and if you have any advice go ahead.
