Rushing Fraternity as a Sophomore
I posted something similar in the Business School forum, but after few responses I think it could get more traction here. I attended a non target this past year, my first year of uni. I didn't want to be here in the first place, so I grinded, joined some orgs, and got a high GPA. I was fortunately able to transfer to a semi target with good OCR and placement on Wall Street. However, this school has fantastic Greek life that I am highly interested in. I want to join a fraternity in my first semester as a sophomore. My classes shouldn't be too hard- I'm mostly taking intros due to being new to the B school. Given the school, I am sure that many fraternities I am interested in have many guys who have gone through the process of recruitment who are willing to vouch for me and offer me advice. My slight aversion to going through the pledgeship process is the vast amount of time it takes that could take away from joining organizations and prepping myself on the more technical side of things. I wasn't able to land a position for this summer, so my resume may not be as competitive as others applying for the student organizations and school programs focused on investment banking. Since I have nothing in valuable work experience outside of retail jobs, I plan to read and work through Rosenbaum's book on investment banking, with the hope that if I can nail some technical questions and can prepare answers for why I want to do what I want to do that I can be a strong applicant in a very competitive pool. In my post on the school forum, the two comments said that it should be no biggie and that it provided them fun and valuable connections which helped their careers. Does anyone have any advice regarding this?
Life is short so do what you want
I am not in a fraternity, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think it would be a good idea. In my experience hearing from friends in fraternities, upper-year members can give you great advice as you mentioned, as well as give you tips and tricks for courses as they've done them before.
Also, pledging (at my university) usually happens in the beginning of each term (September / January), when classes are just starting, so you won't really be behind much, if at all. I would try it out because there are many alumni in banking and that can give you a good connection piece when networking. Hope that helps.
It sounds like you are already on track to doing well post undergrad. I'd say go for it and have fun. I joined a fraternity and would do it again if I went back through college. Life is all about balance.
