Should I bring material to explain my non-business research?

Hi!

I have an engineering background, and have been conducting research in a field completely unrelated to finance. I've realized my interest in finance over engineering half way last year as a junior, and am looking for a front office position.

I think for anyone not in the field, the work is hard to explain. My question is, I have interviews coming up, and was wondering if it was appropriate to bring material to the interview to explain what I've been doing? Would it be viewed as a cop out of sorts? I think it'd be more pleasant for both of us if I could show some pretty pictures.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hiya,

I've been in similar situations and all I can say is that you should practice trying to explain to a layperson what it is you are doing. If you're applying for technical positions I think that this is an ideal opportunity for you to impress the interviewer - you can communicate with your boss technical terms without boring them/scaring them away. I've also found that in most cases they might try to get someone with a similar background to yours to interview you, especially for quant roles.

I think bringing in material may make it look like you're treating them like children (which they well may be). I think practice with friends not from your field and make it look like you're explaining off the bat at the interview?

Just my two cents.
