Sophomore Summer Intern
Hey guys I'm a sophomore at a non-target in NYC with decent grades and decent extracurriculars. Any ideas on where to look for a summer internship? I feel like I really need one before I apply for junior year internships. Also what are the chances I could land some sort of unpaid hedge fund internship with no connections?
Start cold calling all the firms on interest. People love free interns.
How are you going to apply to a hedge fund with no connections? You don't know any hedge funds because you have no connections. Hedge funds aren't investment banks; you don't know them unless you get out there and discover them. First question I ask to people who want to apply to hedge funds is: "list me ten realistic hedge funds off the top of your head." Most can't. You can't apply to what you don't know.
Truthfully you're a little young, I'd focus your summer efforts on learning a skill that you can develop throughout the rest of your college career. Choose something that you feel can be marketable for your target career down the line.
Thanks for the advice guys.
EnergyHOU Any suggestions as to where I can cold call/apply in order to build marketable skills for the future?
I'm based in Houston, don't know any funds up North other than the large obvious ones you shouldn't waste your time on. Try locating some sort of an association or networking group of some sort for hedge fund professionals and join it as a student. Great setup to begin building a list of funds. Then you can begin the long road of building a real relationship with some managers (not standard networking) and ultimately be another undergrad straight into a HF after graduation.
Best of luck to you!
Does your school have a career database?
newbie16 Not sure about a database, but we do have job postings. However, most jobs are accounting or are looking for a junior/senior, which makes my search tougher. I am currently sending out emails to boutique firms and hoping something hits.
