Starting off at a boutique consulting firm?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and recently I've been doing a lot of research in the business field. I'm an upcoming senior at a non targeted school in the LA area. My gpa isn't high as well 3.3ish, but I really want to get into consulting. Anything similar to Accenture's management consulting. I don't mind the long hours, hard work, and travel, it's actually what I want. I've tried applying for internships with no success, so I was wondering what's the best route to go for a consulting position? Should I search for boutique firms? Will I still have long hours, training, hard work, and travel involved in the smaller firms?

Thanks!

What school are you attending? I went to a non-target in LA as well and was in a similar position as you. I'd recommend aiming for a Big 4 Advisory / Accenture / CapGemini / BAH position if possible. "Applying" for an internship is a complete waste of time and effort coming from a non-target. Applying for jobs through the company website is reserved for those students who have access to OCR. Otherwise, it's not worth the 1-2 hours to prep cover letters and resumes each time. At the moment, I'm working at a boutique consulting firm and I can assure you the hours, travel, training, etc., are still there. However, the nature of the work and the day to day grind isn't nearly as enjoyable. Depending on where you end up, most boutique shops tend to focus on financial controls, ERP implementations, regulation adherence, compensation, etc. In a year or so, I'm hoping my experience and network can help me lateral into one of the aforementioned consulting firms above. No shot at the Big 3 without B-School.

Do you have any alumni in Consulting? Or you familiar with the basics of networking? No offense intended, I'm just not sure where you're at.
