Summer 27 Internship

Hi,

I've been looking for a summer IB/S&T internship since long time ago. Still haven't found anything and inconsistently getting interviews. Most aren't converting to offers though. I would appreciate someone's mentorship on my resume and interview skills.

Currently at a target, ok GPA, unfortunately found out about recruiting too late and nobody in my circle is in banking, so had a hard time so far with knowing what to say and who to ask.

I'd like to say I'm coachable, so any help or pointers would be appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps to improve your chances of landing an IB or S&T internship:

1. Resume Optimization

  • Use a Standardized Template: Ensure your resume follows the one-page investment banking format. WSO offers Investment Banking Resume Templates that are highly regarded.
  • Highlight Relevant Experience: Even if your past experience isn’t directly finance-related, craft a compelling story about how it led you to banking. For example, if you worked at a startup, emphasize exposure to fundraising or financial decision-making.
  • Quantify Achievements: Use metrics to showcase impact (e.g., "Increased sales by 20%" or "Analyzed $5M in assets").
  • Live Deals or Projects: If you’ve worked on live deals or financial projects, include them. If not, consider joining your university’s investment club or working on mock deals to add substance.

2. Networking

  • Leverage Alumni: Use LinkedIn or your school’s alumni database to connect with alumni in banking. Start with a polite message asking for advice or an informational interview.
  • Cold Outreach: Send personalized emails to professionals in the industry. Mention your target school and express genuine interest in learning from their experience.
  • Attend Events: Participate in finance-related events, webinars, or WSO Virtual Bootcamps to meet industry professionals.

3. Interview Preparation

  • Behavioral Questions: Practice crafting concise and impactful answers to common behavioral questions. Focus on your story, why banking, and your unique value proposition.
  • Technical Skills: Brush up on technical knowledge. WSO offers Investment Banking Interview Prep resources that cover valuation, accounting, and financial modeling.
  • Mock Interviews: Consider scheduling mock interviews with professionals. WSO provides this service to help refine your responses and boost confidence.

4. GPA and Academics

  • While your GPA is okay, aim to improve it if possible. A higher GPA can help offset a late start in recruiting.
  • Take finance-related courses or certifications to demonstrate commitment and build technical skills.

5. Part-Time Internships

  • If summer internships are elusive, look for part-time opportunities during the semester. Boutique investment banks or private equity firms often offer these roles, especially in major cities or remotely.

6. Mentorship

  • WSO offers Resume Reviews by Professionals and Find a Mentor services. These can provide personalized feedback and guidance tailored to your situation.

By focusing on these areas, you can significantly improve your chances of securing an internship. Stay persistent, and don’t hesitate to seek help from resources like WSO to refine your approach!
