Summer Investment Banking Internship after Senior Year?

Me:

  • School: Non-target - rank 50 ~ 75
  • Major: Computer Science, honors program
  • GPA: 3.4x/4.00
  • Major GPA: 3.6x/4.00

I've grown tired of the profession that I am destined to have with my current major. But as a senior, I don't have time to get an internship in investment banking after this summer, so I'm pretty much limited to shooting for full-time or an internship after graduating.

But let's say that I only end up with an internship for the summer of 2013. Would this be a risky proposition? I'm afraid that even the boutique/mm investment banks will be reluctant to hire someone that's out of school with no job because it sort of conflicts with their hiring season/schedule.

How to Break into Investment Banking After Graduation

As OP stated, breaking into investment banking in his situation will be difficult. As always, the main advice is Network. Network. Network. You need to do something that shows an interest in/dedication to finance in addition to your computer science major. Maybe you can pursue an area of finance where comp sci is useful.

Even with this, it might even be hard to get “only” an internship. Luckily, there is plenty of advice on WSO on how to go about this non-traditional route to investment banking. Some members who have gone this route may even be open to PM conversations.

For better or worse, banking recruiting is extremely systematic. Unfortunately, your profile illustrates little interest in finance and you will be going up against others with relevant internships.

First of all, I wouldn't expect obtaining an offer for FT. However, if you network hard and learn a lot on your own, you may have a shot. Now, for internship recruiting, the fact that you will be a senior is going to work against you. Many banks strictly want to see juniors apply for internships. So you aren't guaranteed "only" an internship either. Perhaps you could delay graduation. This would eliminate the aforementioned problem. However, I'd hate to recommend someone to take on more debt.

Apologies for being frank with you, but it's better you know now rather than later.

Network, Network, Network. I come from a non-target non finance major at all and was able to break into MM IBD. PM me and I'll help where i can

Pike, I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Can you PM me? (I dont have enough banana points to do it)

Hey pike, I come from a similar background. This thread is several years old but I was wondering if you could PM with some helpful tips as well

Echo what Pike said. I cannot stress that enough to people when I discuss my story. I also came from a non-target and got into a MM IBD after graduation (but right before training for the analyst class).
