TA on Resume?

Hi Monkeys!

I have the opportunity to TA an upper div finance class next semester and was wondering if the ROI for time invested would be worth it when it comes to IB recruiting. Is it a strong signal or just fluff?

Also would I put it under work experience, on campus involvement, or education?

Regards,
A rising sophomore

Being a TA for an upper-division finance class can be a solid addition to your resume for IB recruiting, but its impact depends on how you position it. Here's what you need to know:

  1. ROI for IB Recruiting:

    • While being a TA won't be a game-changer like internships or deal experience, it does signal strong academic performance, leadership, and communication skills.
    • It can help differentiate you slightly, especially if you lack other standout experiences early in your academic career.
  2. Where to List It on Your Resume:

    • Work Experience: If the TA role involves significant responsibilities like grading, holding office hours, or leading discussions, it can be framed as professional experience.
    • On-Campus Involvement: If the role is more about assisting the professor with minor tasks, it might fit better here.
    • Education: If the TA position is tied to your academic achievements (e.g., offered due to excelling in the class), you could list it under education as a sub-bullet.
  3. How to Frame It:

    • Highlight specific responsibilities and skills that align with IB, such as analytical thinking, attention to detail, and communication. For example:
      • "Led weekly review sessions for 30+ students, clarifying complex financial concepts and improving class performance by 15%."
      • "Graded assignments and provided detailed feedback, ensuring accuracy and consistency across 100+ submissions."
  4. Final Thoughts:

    • If you're early in your academic career (as a rising sophomore), this is a good move to build your resume. However, as you gain internships or more relevant experience, the TA role will likely take a backseat.

In short, it's not "fluff" if you can frame it effectively, but don't overestimate its weight compared to internships or direct finance-related experience.
