Too late to break into IB?

I'm a rising junior at a HYPSM school with a 4.0 in a humanities major. Hispanic, if that matters. I wasn't really aware of IB as a potential career path until a few months ago—I submitted a few apps without networking, but needless to say I didn't even get any first rounds. Is pursuing IB still worth it at this point? I'm told it's almost impossible to recruit full-time without a major internship in the field.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. Timing and Background:

    • As a rising junior at a HYPSM school with a 4.0 GPA, you have a strong academic background, which is a significant advantage.
    • Being Hispanic can also be beneficial due to diversity initiatives in many firms.
  2. Networking:

    • Networking is crucial in the IB recruitment process. Since you missed out on networking earlier, it's essential to start now. Reach out to alumni, attend virtual events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.
  3. Internship Opportunities:

    • While it's true that having a major internship in IB is highly beneficial, it's not the only path. You can still aim for relevant internships in finance, consulting, or even corporate finance roles. These experiences can help you build a strong resume for full-time recruitment.
  4. Full-Time Recruitment:

    • Full-time recruitment without a prior IB internship is challenging but not impossible. Focus on gaining relevant experience, honing your technical skills, and preparing for interviews. Consider applying to smaller firms or boutiques where the competition might be less intense.
  5. Alternative Paths:

    • If IB remains your goal, consider other entry points such as corporate finance, consulting, or even a master's program in finance. These can provide valuable experience and potentially lead to lateral moves into IB.
  6. Persistence and Preparation:

    • Persistence is key. Continue applying, networking, and preparing for interviews. Utilize resources like WSO guides, mock interviews, and technical preparation materials to enhance your chances.

In summary, while it may be more challenging to break into IB without prior internships, it's not too late. Focus on networking, gaining relevant experience, and preparing thoroughly for the recruitment process.
