Toronto Boutique IB/small PE

Hi I’m a student from Toronto looking for a Freshman summer internship. Could anyone list some possible Boutique banks, or PE firms around the GTA that could start my cold email process with? Thanks

You have search funds listed on there and the majority of those companies exclusively hire from Western. Firepower and Gen Cap are done, Laurelcrest is no longer a good spot, Auxo hasn't taken interns in years, BSCI is not a good search fund.

Wow these are niche haha. I haven’t even heard of some of these…
What’s your goal? Just get some sort of buyside or sellside role for your first summer?

Few Comments:
LaurenCrest is cool - team has great experience as a group.
Pillar49 guys are super nice and smart, you won’t get paid though and I don’t know how involved their interns are. I spoke to one before and it sounds like it’s not super hands on (rightly so as it is unpaid - I believe)
Power Sustainable is a bigger fund than any on your list, but good people.

Other smaller IBs
Clarus Securities
M Partners
Echelon
Red Cloud
Research Capital
Haywood

Other PEs
Fax Capital
Banyan
Caldwell Investment
Panache
Fax Capital
EDC / BDC (huge AUM and gov backed but not top of mind for students - which I don’t get)

I’d also check the CVCA directory, as well as the CPC list on the TSX.

Reach out to family offices too (Hennick & Co., HIA, etc.)

I’m under the assumption that most freshman internships are unpaid or wouldn’t be able to pay enough for me to find a place to stay in the us. In toronto I’m planning to just live with my parents for the duration of the summer.

Just wanted an update, since I am also on the same path now. looking for unpaid experience during the summer. Wanted to know if you had any luck last year. If so, where? And How should I reach out?

Thanks.

this is opp under a different account. Honestly it was pretty brutal there are really only a few toronto firms that would take interns freshman year but I didn’t have much luck getting responses from them (I have friends that did though). My 200+ emails resulted in a single conversion with a search fund during the spring (I did get an interviewfor a really cool hedge fund but it fell short) I did learn however that you can get some pretty cool buy side stuff sophmore year. I didn’t really take advantage of this and I ended up getting someone thing in the US for both summers. For freshman year I’d try local wealth management firms if I was u.

I'm actually a sophomore, my first year summer I did a search fund internship for 4 months, Im also pretty involved with this finance club on campus and GPA isnt great but it is decent. This summer, if I dont get paid work. I was looking into MM investment banks that might be interested in having me. Probably will be unpaid though but I dont mind. Just was confused on how I should begin reaching out. Like should I email the execs and just attach my resume and say Im interested in an unpaid role, just have me. Or I should go through the networking/coffee chat with the juniors and then if it goes well, bring out the idea fo interning there.
