Underwriting at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance

Does anyone have any information on the entry level salary for an underwriter at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance?

Do you think it’s good experience as an internship if working in IB, CB, PE, Asset Management, etc post grad is the end goal?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Entry-Level Salary for an Underwriter at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance:

    • Unfortunately, the specific entry-level salary for an underwriter at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance is not provided in the available context. You might want to check salary databases or reach out to current or former employees for more precise information.
  2. Experience Value for Post-Grad Goals in IB, CB, PE, Asset Management:

    • Private Equity (PE): Internships in PE are highly valued and can significantly boost your chances of breaking into IB, as PE and IB work closely together. A PE internship is often seen as more exclusive and prestigious compared to other finance internships.
    • Investment Banking (IB): Having experience in PE can make your IB applications stand out. IB internships are also highly regarded and provide a solid foundation for a career in finance.
    • Corporate Banking (CB): CB internships are beneficial, especially if secured before your junior year. They can serve as a stepping stone to IB internships.
    • Asset Management: While not explicitly mentioned, experience in underwriting at a reputable firm like Berkshire Hathaway could be beneficial, but it might not be as directly relevant as PE or IB internships.

For more detailed advice, you might want to explore specific threads on Wall Street Oasis or consult with professionals in the field.

Berkshire has a pretty decent rep and specialty is always a good thing especially starting out. I saw you’re in Canada so I’m not sure the range, in the states it’s likely 70-90 w/out bonus starting. I’ve heard they run their underwriters pretty hard.

Is it as well paying or prestigious as any of the things you listed? No. Not by a long shot. Like not even the same game really.

But it will be much less stressful, way less hours, and way steadier. 9-5 on a bad day. Im an underwriter with 2ish YOE, I’m over 100 w/out bonus, and I nap most afternoons. Maybe once or twice a year I’ll work late.
