What qualifies you as "mixed race"

In the process of filling out internship applications I always get to the self-identification part and wonder how much it would help if I was a minority. I did a 23andme thing a few months ago and it said I was like 4-5% native american. Is this enough to be "mixed-race" or will I immediately get dinged after showing up for my interviews without looking like chief wahoo.

I believe you have to have ancestry on a tribal registry or something like that. If you can't pinpoint the tribe your ancestor belonged to or don't have any record that you part Native American, that might be a red flag.

Beyond that, thinking about "identity", if you just know you're fractionally Native American and can't name the tribe or any other details and have never honored that part of your heritage, do you really "identify" as Native American?
