When should I start applying for internships?
Hey guys, so I am currently an incoming freshman into Rutgers and saw a post on social media that highlighted what companies opened up their internships for Summer 2023. It was mentioned that 90% of JPMorgan's class was filled, so I wanted to ask you guys when it is appropriate to apply for an internship?
Additionally, where should I be interning during my first year summer? Is it even feasible to land an IB role in WS right out of your first year or do most people intern in other fields?
Current Student who has gone through recruiting at a semi-target so likely a pretty different experience to Rutgers but here is some insight from me take it or leave it.
First, it is most important who you know especially at a non-target so I would join ECs on campus and get to know upperclassmen with banking offers. This is much more important than landing an "IB" internship as a freshman.
Second, I would focus on learning the technicals and being ready to interview come sophomore year. Being able to interview well carries more weight than some no-name IB internship.
Third, focus on those things freshman year and then start reaching out to no-name banks to try to land something but unless you are an urm you are unlikely to land something till your junior year.
Hope this helps.
During what month would you start reaching out for Freshman year Summer?
