When to Lock in NYC Housing?

I, and I’m sure many of you, have a 2023 summer internship in NYC. When should we start looking for housing and how long before an internship do most people figure out their 2/3 month lease on a place? The market is super competitive right now so don’t want to get blindsided on a shitty deal because I waited too long.

Note: Does it also depend on location? I’m going to be at MS for location reference right off times square.

Thanks for the help!
