Why did I receive this phone call after getting rejected?

I had final round interviews (superday with several other candidates together) over a month ago and promptly received a rejection email. I thought I bombed this interview and it wasn't a good performance so I knew a rejection was coming. I didn't bother sending thank you emails or anything either.

I received a call recently by someone in HR that they are still considering me and they're wondering what type of roles I'm interested in so I basically said the same thing I said during the interviews. She also said to let her know if I come across any full-time openings that I'm interested in. Is this HR not aware that I had been rejected already? Has this happened to anyone before and why was I suddenly unrejected? I'm not holding onto any false hopes but how can I best proceed to get an offer from this company? It's a very large finance company with offices all over the world.

Right before I graduated I got rejected at a major bank after I applied for an equity analyst position. Then, one month later I got a call from the HR rep to apply at their leveraged finance dept. I messed up the case they gave me even though the interview went great.

So it happens. Its not very common, but it can happen.

This isnt uncommon. During my senior year I interviewed with about 6 people at a firm and I didnt end up getting the offer. About a month later I get an email from an associate in another coverage group who said he came across my resume and heard good reviews from the previous interviewers, I ended up getting an offer. So you obviously made a good impression on someone.

I'm just going to echo what others said. I once interviewed for a place and even though the HR lady liked me, the director thought my skill wasn't a great fit for the role.

The HR lady called me the following day asking me what other roles I would consider as she would still like to forward my resume to any division where she sees an opening.

Just like in your situation, not getting the specific job you interviewed doesn't equate to being blacklisted from the firm. They are other areas you can interview for. The bigger the firm, the more this is true.
