They have a spreadsheet with everyone they've talked to and from there decide who gets interviews. Basically whoever are the first and second year analysts from your school at that bank decide who they think should be interviewed.
If they're rolling they will do the same thing, but maybe be more strict due to the fact that some students might apply later. Otherwise, it's bullshit.
Diversity always helps.
Usually they'll know if you are diversity if you tell them.
