Military Veteran late to the game.
Greetings, I am a long time reader but haven't really had the chance to post something so hear it goes.
31 year old Veteran, spent four years in the Marines as an MP (Miltary Police). Got out, partied, slacked off in school due to lack of direction and ended up working for a non profit in LA for a few years. Woke up one day and quit the job, went back to school with a major drive to do better for myself. I am now a Junior at a Cal State school and researching careers in Finance.
Hoping I can get some guidance in this field, and what my options are this late In the game.
Welcome,
I noticed that there hasn't been many welcoming chimps. Thank you for your service. I personally don't think your too late in the game. However, its good that you were able to figure out what you want to do. I think that you still have a lot of options available to you. If your able to hold a part-time job while going to school full-time (assuming), one good way may be to start as a teller or apply for internships. Considering that your a veteran, you actually have a lot of resources you can use. Have you figured out a specific area that you would like to specialize in?
Welcome and Semper Fi!
I am a former Marine as well and have been working in Banking/Finance for over 10 years now. I am always open to helping a fellow vet, what type of guidance are you looking for specifically?
Hey rainjer, I would be interested in some guidance. I am a Army Vet looking to get into finance myself. I am majoring in finance at a non-target school. I am primarily looking into corporate finance, M&A's, and also Investment Banking. Shoot me a pm if possible or on this thread.
I am currently not able to send PM (too green I guess) so post up what kind of guidance you are seeking. Are you looking for help narrowing down these fields, what classes to take, intricacies of the job(s)?
What classes are you taking now? Why IBD, M&A, and Corporate Fin?
I realized that I couldn't PM you when you posted to this earlier. I need at least 10 banana points in order to do that. I am looking for guidance more particularly in Corporate Finance. If I can't get any guidance there, then M&A's. Then off to Investment Banking. Currently I would like to know how to "get my foot in the door" so to speak. Currently, I have about 7 classes till I complete my degree. However I'm going through University of Phoenix and majoring in Finance. Basically here is my situation:
I am a 9 year veteran with the U.S. Army. I spent about 7 years active duty and I am currently in the reserves and unemployed. During my time on active duty, I started to go to a campus school, but realized that the amount of travel I was doing didn't really give me time to complete it. I transferred to University of Phoenix as it allowed me to be flexible. I have not changed my degree nor have I goofed off or anything, just been continuing my schooling. I have always had an interest in finance during my freshmen year of high school, so its been a long time. As for the classes that I have taken so far they are, besides management classes as well as general courses, are:
PRINCIPLES OF ACCOUNTING BUSINESS LAW FINANCE FOR BUSINESS MARKETING PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS INTEGRATED BUSINESS TOPICS FINANCE FOR DECISION MAKING CORPORATE RISK MANAGEMENT MERGERS, ACQUISITIONS, AND CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING INVESTMENT FUNDAMENTALS AND PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT (Currently taking)
As for why I want to pursue these, I realized that I am more of a analyst than anything. So I know Corporate Finance would probably be up my alley. I most definitely not doing it for the money, but rather I enjoy crunching numbers and analyzing them and becoming a problem solver. Working long hours is no problem for me, considering my background. However, going through the Army, I have been a Human Resources and Paralegal. So here are my questions:
What would be the best way to get into Corporate Finance, M&A's, or IBD? Considering that I am taking an online college, would this hurt me? Would any seminars such as the WSO Bootcamp programs offer an advantage? Any advice? Or mentors?
