I'm sure there are lots of iranians here, not too sure about persians...

on that same note,

are there any romans, medians, phoenicians, or minoans here?

I am Persian. I say Persian usually because that is my heritage and yes it is our etnicity. As well since the last 30 years, "Iranian" in the western world is associatd with Hesibula/Khaomeni/extremist islamic republic, which is completely different from the world my parents grew up in.

If you really care its all written on wikipedia, why Persian is different than Iranian. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_people

Btw, I guess you have never met any Serbian/Italian/Portugese

What's with all the people having a problem with people calling themselves Persian. They may be from Iran, but have a more specific ethnicity. It is a better discription of their heritage and culture... Try not to sound so ignorant, "Del monte" and "prick"

It is the same as if someone is Jewish from a specific country. I get annoyed by the ignorance on this board.

PERSIAN used to be the western word for Iran. Iranians in Iran don't call themselves persian... they call themselves IRANIANS. only the douchebag iranians who come to the US/Canada feel the need to call themselves persians.

but iranians are not the only ones that do this... go check out people of the great land of Hong Kong. Hey Chow Ming, where are you from? Hong Kong! Ahhh, you mean China? no. no I am from Hong Kong. Right....

Let's get this straight once and for all.

Many ETHNIC groups with different cultures and heritages live in the country Iran such as Persians (by far the largest group), Azeris, Mazandarani, Kurds, Arabs, Baluchi, Lurs, Turkmens, Qashqai, Armenians, Persian Jews, Georgians, Assyrians, Circassians, Tats & Pashtuns.

The correct term for the nationality of a person from Iran is Iranian. Although some people still claim to be from Persia, it's wrong since the name of the country officially changed from Persia to Iran after WW1 which is a long time before the revolution.

But ethnic background is different from nationality so it would be wrong to state Iranian as ethnicity.
