One route you can go is to apply for an MBA and when accepted just take time off until the MBA starts.

I've never been in IB, but still finance/big commercial bank.

That said - yes, I quit to take a year off and go do my own thing after getting completely burned out and disillusioned. Only ended up being off for about 9 months before getting back to work. I don't regret it. 

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "normal" but I don't think its viewed overly negatively if you can narrate the reason you decided to take off and make it believable. Do not say its because you got burned out.
