I was recently introduced to Slack by a friend of mine, who told me that it is quite popular at his bank. Today I read on a FT article that it was valued $5.1bn! An IPO is not a short-term objective though, according to the chief executive of the company.
Does anyone use it? And do you find it useful? Haven't tried it yet but it seems a cool alternative communication platform.

I use it daily. For any technical conversations, it's a must. You can post correctly formatted code and links, and it lets you upload documents for later use. It's basically a chatroom service, which is very useful today. You can set up a group with a main channel for everyone to discuss things and you have a direct line to everyone as well. I think people are veritably insane to give it that valuation, but anything goes these days.
I, too, am interested in various opinions regarding Slack. Also, has anyone here used Asana (an alternative but also a complementary service with Slack integration)? I'm looking into it for my company and was wondering if there were any legit reviews
Yup - Asana is pretty good if you use it religiously. Used it pretty heavily at a previous internship so can answer any specific questions over PM need be

I did not. I was going to implement it at a job I was considering taking ("my company"), and then the job fell through. Became a moot point.
Used it at every company I've ever worked and loved it.
You gotta use the /giphy integration though. So when you close a deal, you can drop a dope gif.
It's really good for quick project updates and assignments or questions between analysts, associates, and interns. Used it to some extent everywhere I have been, I used it a lot more in banking (S&T now) though.
For engineering/tech companies it's a must have at this point.
I interviewed at Slack a couple of years ago and met the founder... very strange guy.
It's IRC for the modern world.
IRC, where the men are men, the women are men and the little girls are FBI agents.
Been using it a few years with a few connections (mostly friends). From a pure social standpoint, it's not much different than texting on your phone except maybe quicker on the keyboard.
My MF division (relatively small) uses Slack. Ever since the Whatsapp thing about HF guys using WA for insider information revealed itself, we switched over to Slack. Got to say, WA was more convenient, but Slack isn't far behind.
Slack is the shit, but we don't use it at work. I use it with a number of tech groups and nonprofit organizations outside of the office. The mobile app is pretty good imo.

Is anyone part of any Slack channels that are industry group-specific for IBD on the job discussions or are interested in starting one?
For example, would love to start an IBD TMT Slack channel to (anonymously) discuss and collaborate on our business development content since we're all just duplicating each other's work over and over again. I've been putting together an OTT landscape, which I'd be happy to share since it'll get used one and then tossed, what a waste of all my effort.
