Apartment hunting AFTER you've started work?

Living in/near downtown in my city = $1200-1500/mo for a 1BR apt.
I'm thinking around $700-900/mo for a 2BR if I find a roommate. I can't see myself paying up to $1500/mo for a place I might only be able to enjoy on the weekends, so I'll probably go with the latter.

I'm basically wondering if I should actually expect to have any time once I start work to go apartment hunting and move into a new place (aside from any free time I might have while on the bench). If not, then I suppose I'll find a place beforehand and forego the savings from living at home. Sure the extra $1k would be great but I'd like to be closer to the action while I'm still young.

Let me know if I'm looking at this the wrong way.

 

Depends on the city. I've done the apartment search thing in a number of different cities and it differs. In some cities, it is customary for brokers to work and do showings on the weekend. In other cities (smaller), buildings are closed to prospective tenants on the weekend and you have to find a place during the week. Do a little bit of legwork and find out what is common in your area.

Honestly though, you will be able to find an apartment while working either way, it will just be meaningfully easier if you can do it on the weekend. You can always ask your friends if they have a room opening up soon and find a place that way.

I probably won't bother with a broker since I think I'm going to go down the roommate route instead, which means craigslist/kijiji.

Assuming I manage to find a place while working, I think the more pressing issue might become getting it furnished - ie. having to go shopping, getting things delivered, assembling, etc.

I'm dying to move out but I keep thinking that I'm going to regret it later on, money-wise. I guess the title of this thread should've been, "should I move out?"

After taking some other expenses into account it seems like I'll end up with ~2k saved at the end of each month if I move out and ~3k if I live at home. I'm concerned that the 2k won't be enough for a vacation, weekend excursions or most importantly, a rainy day fund in case something happens to my job.

Should I wait and see how much travelling I end up actually having to do before I decide?

 

Also, do firms ever provide a moving/relocation allowance if you're already in the same city? I didn't ask when I received the offer but if they do then this could probably sway my decision towards an apartment.
