Are there any artists on WSO?

Eh, I wouldn't say "artist" but I got some bags designed, flew out to China and got them manufactured for my business. Also been doing video making and editing for around 7 years via FCPX, graphic design for years, etc. Going into finance if my business doesn't work out.

Not a visual artist, but I entered undergrad as a music performance major. Mostly because I was good at it, not necessarily because I wanted a career in it. I switched majors to economics halfway through my sophomore year because the school allowed me to keep my music scholarship as long as I continue to play for the music department's ensembles. I'm now at a REPE firm versus my music classmates who are almost all going to grad school for the same thing or settling for any job in the industry, so I'd say I made the right choice.

I do large scale abstract oil on canvas. Yes, I have sold pieces.

Also, my left and right brain are both strong which is rare (~2%), which gives me a numbers/math side as well as a creative side.

I studied classical piano for 12 years, and still play, fwtw. I don't compose though.

not an artist or anything equivalent, but I used to play a traditional Chinese instrument (erhu, like a violin put vertically...), then saxophone for 5 years. Stopped playing saxophone because of unstoppable reasons. Just started learning classical guitar for less than a year. Really want to learn piano and cello if I have the chance.

I am huge into music as a hobby. I play a variety of instruments from anywhere from 20+ years to just a couple. I would never try to make a career out of it though. Not enough talent or luck to make it.

The thing I like about music is that it always keeps you humble. As good as you think you are getting, you listen to a true expert and you realize how much you have to learn. Not kidding when I say that learning a new instrument is one of the best activities to help you realize your shortcomings. It's pretty concrete.

I have been playing guitar for about 20 years. Played just about everything except for country - I enjoy country, but it just never captivated me as a player. In high school I played with a couple bands - mainly/jam band blues. At the time nu metal was the only hard music anyone wanted to play and I hated it. During the army I would jam with a couple guys that played. However, I would mainly do fingerstyle trying to become the next Leo Kottke (easier said than done). After the army I started lessons again with the intent of majoring in music theory and guitar performance. However, talking to a friend that was a trader had re sparked an interest in finance. During college, I ended up getting a thrash/prog metal band going with a childhood friend. We were really good at writing with each other and had a descent knowledge of theory. Also, we were very good at pushing eachothers limits in terms of skill and idea production. Things were going well, small shows and getting ready to cut a demo with a producer who was going to record us pro bono. As traction was starting to build I ended up getting booted after a minor incident while we were warming up (it was literally nothing). They hired another guitar player and I don't think they played another show. A couple months passed and I was invited back in to play continuous lead and do some synth work, but declined. The band fell apart a couple months later. I am still friends with the guy that booted me (he apologized after realizing it was an over reaction and a mistake) and a couple other members. We would jam from time to time, however, we all had careers going at that point. Now I have a bunch of guitars and only really play two of them about every couple of months. I basically make sure my hands haven't gone full retard and put them away.

Used to draw fairly well in school, was even better with clay. Attended local art school, some stuff even went to competitions. Wanted to become an architect, failed miserably with the entry exams, 10 people were competing per each spot at that program. After that applied for Econ udergrad, and here I'm trading CIS bonds for Boris and Anton, which is not that bad? Right? Eh? F**k my life.

I used to paint nude (oil painting) and did a few art shows; while working, I did commercial fashion photography for some New York-based clothing lines.

I draw, paint, and play 2 instruments. Never was a pro though. Guy I work with is an ex actor who didn't make it big and called in the risk and got a career before it was too late, but still does some off-off-Broadway stuff.

Art predates pretty much any other human skill we know of short of maybe making fire or bashing something with a rock...seems a bit autistic when someone doesn't have any level of development there. You don't have to be the next Picasso to pick up a guitar or paint brush. Classes from youtube will help most people get basic skills.

I used to play piano for a while and was quite good at it until I had to stop lessons because at the time my parents couldn't afford it. So I had stopped playing for a period of 5 years and then started to self-teach myself as I renewed my interest. In terms of making art, I am utter shit. I do have an appreciation for the arts though and it is a legitimate talent and isn't easy to make complex forms of art. Boy do I wish I had an innate talent for being good at art.
